What do you actually believe - and why?

This Summer, Let's Think Together About What We Actually Believe

Friends, this summer San Pedro Presbyterian Church is offering something Christians need to review from time to time — a real, honest, no-fluff study of the Christian faith. Over eight Wednesday evenings, our we will work through selected chapters of Christian Doctrine by Shirley Guthrie, one of the most readable and trustworthy guides to theology ever written for ordinary believers. We begin June 4th and run through July 19th, meeting at 6:00 p.m. both in person and via livestream. We begin with the question Guthrie opens with: who is a theologian? His answer, and I think you'll agree, is that you already are one. The only question is whether you're doing it carefully.

Each week we'll take up one of the great topics of the Christian faith — the nature of God, the person of Jesus Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, the meaning of salvation, the church, and what Christians believe about the life to come. These are not abstract academic questions. They are the questions underneath every real conversation you've ever had about suffering, about death, about why the world is the way it is, and about whether any of it means something. Guthrie writes for people who like to think, and he respects your intelligence. So do we.

The eight sessions move through chapters covering who God is and how we know him, the humanity and divinity of Christ, creation and what it means to be human, sin and grace, the Holy Spirit, the church and its mission, and Christian hope. Materials will be provided each week — a reading summary and discussion questions so you can come prepared and leave with something you can actually use. No seminary degree required. Just an open Bible and a willingness to ask honest questions.

This class is for you if you've ever sat in church and quietly wondered whether your faith could hold up to a hard question. It's for you if you grew up in the church and realize there are things you've always believed but never quite examined. And it's for you if you're newer to the faith and want a solid foundation, not just inspiration. We're not here to perform certainty — we're here to grow together in the kind of faith that can look at the hard stuff and keep going.

Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m., June 3 through July 19. Join us in person at San Pedro Church in San Antonio, or catch the livestream from wherever you are. Materials provided at no cost. Scott Cales and Dr Stamper will be leading the discussions personally — these will be great conversations, bring yours, too. Or bring your doubts (this will be a safe space to listen and learn from each other).

And as always, bring a friend or share the link. It's an honor to explore big truths with you, and we hope to see you in person if you live in our area.
